Spain Colored Orange defies genre distinctions to create ambitious yet visceral pop music. To simply classify Spain Colored Orange as an ‘indie’ band might be a gross generalization. They may inhabit that space comfortably, but this Houston quintet is more astutely described as a seamless juxtaposition of Electric Light Orchestra, Wings, Air, Captain Beefheart and the Buena Vista Social Club.
Their long-awaited full-length "Sneaky Like A Villain" was crafted in Houston and Brooklyn with Rogue Wave/Mates of State producer Bill Racine at the helm. The album is characterized by band leader Gilbert Alfaro''s sublime vocals and electric piano, which orbit around standard rock instrumentation, analog synthesizers, trumpet, strings, a children''s choir, latin percussion and various forms of sonic manipulation. In a live context, the songs ignite; eliciting immediate ‘70s pop-rock gratification.
Spain has shared the stage with Of Montreal, Fiery Furnaces, Ra Ra Riot and Trail of Dead. Their music has been featured in commercials for Ford Motor Company and Olay Skin Care. The band has also received numerous Houston Press Music Awards, including: Best Indie Rock 2008, Best Indie Rock 2006 and Best Album 2006 for their debut EP "Hopelessly Incapable Of Standing In The Way".
