Appleby Reinhardt Mahfoud Trio Bio

On Saturday April 18th, 2009, the Appleby-Reinhardt-Mahfoud-Trio will unveil its first CD, entitled âEchoes in Time.â The trioâs unique style of hard driving blues is created by three of Buffaloâs best known studio and stage musicians and band leaders. Rodney Appleby on bass and vocals, Ted Reinhardt on drums, and Joseph Michael Mahfoud on guitar and vocals.

Members of this recently created trio have different musical backgrounds and styles and can boast of national, international and local recognition, experience and awards, including admission into the Buffalo Music Hall of Fame. Reinhardt is the reigning king of Buffalo fusion and with Spyro Gyro recorded the platinum record, âMorning Dances.â Appleby is an R&B player from Buffaloâs eastside and with Ian Gillan of Deep Purple recorded the recently completed âOne Eye to Moroccoâ and âLive in Anaheim.â Joe Mahfoud is a classically trained guitarist with a rock background and with the Pappy Johns Band received critical acclaim and multiple Canadian Aboriginal Awards for his âFull Circleâ release.

Most impressive about these virtuoso musicians is the unusual ability to fit into any musical style, sound authentic and not compromise any of their individual musical integrity. Each player grew up with music as his primary passion, goal and inspiration. Sincerity in every note makes their music heartfelt and deep.

The history behind the making of the trio and âEchoes in Timeâ is uncomplicated. The band started with a chance meeting between Joe and Ted on Friday night September 26, 2008 at the Lafayette Tap Room where Ted was playing. By the following Tuesday, the new trio had a steady gig at Double Dâs. With the help of Jesse Rejewski at JR Audio, the recording project began the following Wednesday and each Wednesday thereafter from 10:00am-5:00pm. A total of 24 gigs and 24 studio sessions created the Appleby-Reinhardt-Mahfoud Trioâs 11 song CD of completely original material.

The music is diverse and soulful while leaving room for the players to demonstrate their individual talents. Many of the tunes came from Rodney. At the initial session the band recorded âTime,â the third track on the CD. The band co-wrote âWhoop Your Assâ and the title track âEchoes Lost in Time.â Joe added âCalifornia Road,â a guitar instrumental to round out the CD.

Rodney Appleby Bio
Rodney Appleby is an outstanding bass player who has been inducted into the Buffalo Music Hall of Fame. However, he started as a guitar player. He said, "I got in a lot of trouble for fooling around with my fatherâs guitars, but for some reason I took the trouble. To this day, I still have that same Sears Silvertone guitar." His interest in bass came when trading instruments with friends during basement jams. âI liked the way the bass felt, the sound, and how it really forced the music." A few years later, while walking home from a supermarket, he agreed to play the bass at the request of members of a church's gospel group because he âjust wanted to play with them." Appleby decided to make the bass his lifeâs passion after sitting in on some jam sessions at the Central Park Grill. "At first I sat in the corner and peeked, listening to the tunes. Eventually I studied some of the jazz songs they were playing. So I went down one week, decided this was my day, and put my bass right up front next to the stage to let them know I was there to play."
Rodney is currently performing with Deep Purpleâs vocalist Ian Gillan. He has played with Chuck Berry, Albert Collins, Martha Reeves Motown, Eddie Kendricks from the Temptations, and Anthracite. In addition to being inducted into the Buffalo Music Hall of Fame in 1995, Rodney is also a Buffalo Music Award Winner for best bass player 1992, 1993, 1994, and small-jazz band 2003.

Appleby has opened for the Average White Band, John Secada, and Michael McDonald at Artpark. He wrote, produced, and directed the musical, "Games" which was performed at the Calumet Arts Café, Gemini Dance Theatre, and Martin Luther King Park. Rodneyâs recordings include: âTearsâ (1987), âPsychogenic Fugueâ with the fusion band Anthracite (1992); and âLive in Anaheimâ with Ian Gillan (2008).

Rodney is music director at UJIMA Theater and coordinator for Dunbar Project, a youth arts workshop. Previously, he was a jazz instructor at Buffalo State College. Rodney performs in the orchestra for the African American Cultural Center, the Paul Robeson Center, and Willie Dorseyâs Ellingtonesque big band The Last World Jazz Researchers. Rodney still teaches music privately.
Appleby's favorite bass is his Warwick Corvette five-string raw wood model, which he says âcan sound like a grand piano.â About his music Appleby notes, âI write compositions that are in context of some larger work. They're all puzzle pieces that when put together, make a small series of my life."

Ted Reinhardt Bio

Ted Reinhardt was inducted into the Buffalo Music Hall of Fame in 1985. However, his musical journey began in 1957 when at the age of 4 he started playing drums along with Gene Krupa and Buddy Rich recordings. Before he was 10 he was working Dixieland gigs and at age 11 he was invited to play with Gene Krupaâs band at a club called the Castle.

In high school, Teddy played with the progressive Buffalo band Rodan. Music legends Genesis came to hear Rodan one night at the fabled McVanâs night club. Phil Collins sat with Tedâs parents during the show. From there, Ted hooked up with Spyro Gyra and recorded the platinum record, âMorning Dances.â

Reinhardt started the fusion band Gamalon in 1982. Their first album for Amherst records remained #8 on the Billboard Contemporary Jazz Charts for 6 weeks. Gamalon has recorded 6 discs, including one with sax legend Ernie Watts and one for MCA Records.

Ted continues his musical interests as a private instructor. In the Buffalo club scene he has worked with Willie and Reinhardts, Dave Constantino, Jony James, and Black Cat Blues Band.

Ted has always enjoyed a variety of musical styles. He counts among his influences, Gene Krupa, Buddy Rich, Jack Sperling, Mitch Mitchell, Ginger Baker, Carmine Appice, John Bonham, Michael Giles, Bill Bruford, Phil Collins, John Weathers, Guy Evans, Billy Cobham, Lenny White, Alex Acuna, Tony Williams, Steve Gadd, Max Roach, Elvin Jones, Roy Hanes, Jimmy Cobb, David Garabaldi, Mike Clarke, Clyde Stubblefield, and Steve Jordan.

Joseph Michael Mahfoud Bio
Joseph Michael Mahfoud is a unique musician and bandleader. He is a classically trained and educated guitarist with wide ranging musical talents developed over 30 years. He is as comfortable playing an inspiring Mozart etude as he is playing an expressive Stevie Ray Vaughn blues lick. Joe hails from Six Nations Indian Reservation and was originally inspired by his mother to sing along with her Motown records played through a Sylvania console stereo and by his grandmother who invited bands to practice in her attic. When Joe accompanied his father backstage at a Walter Scott concert at Jacobies, Joe was asked to âplunkâ out some melodies. Scott said, âYouâd better get this kid a guitar.â The next pay check, Joeâs dad bought him a white Hondo II Strat copy from Edwinâs Music. Joe started guitar lessons with Al Meyers after reading his name off the wall at Super Duper shopping market. Al came to his house for $2 .00 per lesson. As they say, âthe rest is history.â
At the age of 10, Joe began recruiting for his first band. His neighbor Danny played guitar, Joeâs Uncle Steve played bass and Shannon Street with a massive afro wider than his shoulders played the drums. By sixth grade the band gave a concert at public school #60. They became well known in the Riverside area of Buffalo, drawing steady crowds to the fabled âband roomâ behind the Projects. By age 14, he started working the club scene when he joined Crash Cadillac and the T-Street Cruisers. Crash Cadillac played steady right through completion of Joeâs high school musical education at Performing Arts.
Joe won a classical guitar competition scholarship allowing him to obtain a college degree in music education and classical guitar from the University of Buffalo. He went on to teach music at Lakeshore Middle and to own Kenmore Music Center. Occasionally, Joe continues to teach music to young people, including at intensive programs in the Charter School system.
His 2004 âFull Circleâ release with The Pappy Johns Band won several Canadian Aboriginal Music Awards. His most notable appearances include the Chicago Blues Fest, the Can-Ab awards at the Skydome, the Iowa Blues Fest, the Memphis Blues Fest, Fox Morning News, the Maple Blues Fest, Jeff Healyâs, and the Saskatoon Blues Fest.
He has been the past band leader for, among others, the Faron Johns Band, JJ Swing, the Hurricanes, the Syndicate, and Universal Grille. Joseph has played sideman to Gap Mangione, James Cotton, Sherman Robertson, Jimmy Griswold, Lance Diamond, Process and Dew Rags, the Jony James Band, and the Rod Nixon Project. In addition to his latest release with Appleby-Reinhardt-Mahfoud, Josephâs gigs range from weddings with About Face Band to blues with The Stevie Project.
