Details:
Our stage name is Labcoat (one word). It means ''The Science of Rock and Roll''. What a chemist does with chemicals in the lab we do with instruments to make the music of Labcoat. We take the themes, rhythms and influences of many music types and transform them all into rock-n-roll.

Labcoat is a strong song writing force with a powerful rhythm section, clean unique guitar, swirling organs and soulful vocals. At a live show anything happens and the rock that emanates from the stage keeps the room mesmerized. Like Mick Jagger or Frank Zappa have been known to do, Labcoat entertains far beyond the music. The band is pure musical science fiction, taking from many musical genres and concocting a brand of soulful, edgy, original, alternative rock-n-roll. Some of the lyrics are poetic and meaningful, while other song’s lyrics are fun and whimsical. Punchy changes and tight rhythm breaks litter the band’s music and help to make each song original. Some songs on the upcoming album are melodic and jazzy, while others are hard rock based, but all have tight, professional guitar licks throughout and a funky bass back beat.

Most of the band originates from Utah and all live there currently. Rick Gerber (keyboards, vocals) was born in Chicago, first picked up a guitar in Arizona, and moved around until eventually discovering the Utah music scene ten years ago. Rick has produced nine years of local music festivals in Utah including the Rolling Summer Mountain Jam and the Uncle Uncanny Music Festival. He has also played guitar, mandolin, banjo, harmonica and slide guitar in many bands including Tanglewood and Ulysses. Wim Becker (electric guitar) and the others are from Utah and Wim has played rock-n-roll in many bands including Hooraywho?, Danger Hailstorm, Cub Country, and Magstatic. Nik Grainger (bass guitar) has added his funky, soulful bass lines to such bands as The Dan K Band and Dead Horse Minstrels. Labcoat''s inventive and energetic drummer, Jon Olsen, has melded Jazz, funk and rock in many bands including Park City''s Transportation, Tanglewood, and Ulysses. He has also played on stage with John Popper, DJ Logic, Dave Schools, and Bernie Worell. Labcoat has been together two years and plays shows weekly as a single billed act, and occasionally with such bands as The Derrick Trucks Band, Eric McFadden, Soul Asylum, and Banyan.

Rick Gerber Recorded two albums with the band Tanglewood: Smokey Amethyst Road in 2004 at Counterpoint Studios in Salt Lake City, Utah; and Everything Grows in 2002 at Ecstatic Studios in Logan, Utah. Wim Becker recorded an album with Danger Hailstorm in 2008 at Counterpoint Studios titled One, and another with Cub Country recorded in Logan, Utah at Andy Patterson Studios titled Stretch That Skull Cover and Smile which is due out in a few months. Nik Granger has been a studio bass player for many bands including Jebu, Wisebird, and Spirit and has a solo album of his own titled Nik G Meets Mushu which was recorded in Salt Lake City, Utah in 2005 at Monarch Studios. Jon Olsen is credited as a studio drummer for many bands from Ogden to Park City, Utah and is considered an exceptional impromptu percussionist. Labcoat’s new album, Superelative Sciencefictional Soundmachine, due out May 09, was recorded at Counterpoint Studios in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Major influences that can be heard throughout Labcoat’s music include rock-n-roll, alternative rock, soul, and funk. Influencing bands include: Talking Heads, Weezer, Wilco, The Beatles, The Kinks, Frank Zappa, Sting, Television, Phantom Planet, Stevie Wonder, War, David Bowie, The Stones, Radiohead, Cymande, Prince, and did I say the Beatles?

Labcoat is like a science fiction novel that has been adapted into a film. There are no space props or laser guns. It’s all a metaphor for the concept that music can tell a strange story and keep its listeners floating along in Utopian apocalyptic bliss. In a world of unanswered questions and garbled meanings, Labcoat is here to take listeners for a brief ride on the mother ship of rock, and when they come back down maybe the world won''t seem so assimilated or static

The songs on our new album, Superelative Sciencefictional Soundmachine, speak for us. ''Nocturnal Parliament'' is about old band mates come and gone, and how each individual affected each others attitude. (A Nocturnal Parliament is a group of owls). ''Suggest You Do the Same'' is about the common ignorance we all share, and how we should be able to give ourselves sound advice. ''Sleepwalker Intermission'' is about the fall of the common good and society and what we might do to survive a zombie outbreak. ''The Sound of Nothing Falling'' was taken from an old poem written by Rick Gerber, as many of his works are, and put to a score written by Wim. Gravity Deception was written by Nik Grainger about the loss of an old friend who took his life. ''Creatures of the Sun'' is about our debt to the sun and how at any moment she could take us out; so we sing and lament to her Omnipotent power. Lamp commander is a song about common struggles and obstacles of life as seen by a man from another time floating in his saucer taking notes.

We are headlining this year''s Desert Rocks Music Festival (https://www.tradebit.com); Earth Jam Music Festival (https://www.tradebit.com) and Uncle Uncannys Music Festival (https://www.tradebit.com) in Utah. We are also playing the Bobolink Music Festival in California (https://www.tradebit.com). A list of current shows can be seen on Rick Gerber’s or Labcoat’s web pages and the CD release party will be announced on all of these sites within the next 2 months.

Every member in the band has been playing music on stage for over ten years. Each has played in a variety of bands from jazz and funk to heavy metal, bluegrass, and jam. Rick, Nik and Wim’s history of writing original songs goes as far back as their on-stage presence. Each member of the band has played on stage with many well known musicians, and Rick has brought many national acts to Utah during his nine years of music festival production. Labcoat has a good standing with Utah’s bars and venues and is considered an asset to the entertainment community. Members have enjoyed stage time during Utah’s Sundance Film Festival, and have packed venues for this occasion.

Rick and Jon’s band, Tanglewood, is played often on Utah’s KRCL 90.9, and Wim’s bands Magstatic and Danger Hailstorm also enjoy frequent air time on this station. Labcoat has been playing different venues around Utah weekly for two years including the festivals mentioned in #8. Labcoat has had two write-ups in the Standard Examiner GO section (Ogden, Utah) and is mentioned in weekly advertisements in the City Weekly (Salt Lake City, UT). Labcoat also participates in https://www.tradebit.com, a website promoting Ogden, Utah’s musicians.

Labcoat is releasing the new album Superelative Sciencefictional Soundmachine within the next two months (dates to be announced online). Labcoat will be featured in the April addition of The Ogden Independent in Ogden, UT. The band is also on the docket for articles in the City Weekly and Slug magazines in Salt Lake City, Utah.

All lyrics and scores are original and written by different members of the band. Many songs are collaborations among band mates, sometimes overlapping poetry and heavy guitar. Labcoat is high energy and entertaining beyond the music.

The band consists of Rick Gerber on piano, organ, and vocals; Wim Becker on guitar and vocals; Nik Granger on bass and vocals and Jon Olsen on drums. All of the members of Labcoat had been playing in a variety of different past bands together for an eight year period until 2007 when this band was formed. Jon and Rick played in a band called Tanglewood together that was a bluegrass/jam band. That band was very popular in Utah before breaking up in 2003. Nik, Jon and Rick played in another band together just long enough to know how well they meshed as musicians. Each member of the band is currently involved with other separate projects including festival production, studio work, solo acts and other bands.

In the next five years, Labcoat expects to be a nationally touring act with national CD sales. The new CD will be available on itunes and other websites so this will boost sales and wide-spread recognition. The band would like to use this as a spring board to greater things.

Ultimately we want to put our music in the fabrics of time.
