Sometimes songs are written by accident, and sometimes songs are written on purpose with some sort of intention attached. Walls is a little bit of both. It is a seven-song album featuring folk-acoustic music with spiritual themes. Many of the songs tackle our human struggle to find God’s divine purpose in our lives. What is the path we’re destined for? Why are we so often pulled away from that straight and level road to the emptiness that surrounds it?
Zender’s rich, insistent voice lends an introspective quality to the lyrics, which explore how we go about finding divine love amidst the distractions of our day-to-day lives. His songs deal with the struggle to tear down the protective walls surrounding our egos. It’s these walls that keep us from feeling the healing presence of God. Can we recognize Him in the smallest corners of our daily existence? In the people who surround us? In the simple glory of a day well lived?
While primarily liturgical in nature, the album has broader appeal with songs like John Mayer, Allow Me One Regret and We Are Instruments. “I want to reach people on a spiritual level whether they recognize themselves as Christian or not,” Zender said. He believes that everyone seeks a spiritual connection with the universe to feel whole and at peace. “I personally feel the struggle to stay on God’s chosen path for me, and my songs reflect that,” he explains.
Zender is the music minister for Holy Cross Parish in Lake Stevens, Washington. He has been the lead singer and songwriter for the band TRUCE for the past six years. This album marks his debut as a Christian artist. He is occasionally accompanied by Adam Bishop..
