MP3 The Best Parts of a Cow - Tres Carnes
An eclectic mix of rock, country, folk, synths, and jazz. The band consists of two bassists (not the only instruments they play) and a guitarist. In a nutshell - experimental, quirky, fun, but somehow intelligent rock.

These guys impressed the hell out of me. They’re a local Central Florida band from St. Petersburg. The band consists of two bassists(not the only instruments they play) and a guitarist. They take turns with the percussion and lend their own abilities on keyboards, woodwinds, violin, and harmonica tossed around with kickass lyrics and occasionally scat and yodel. They do some sampling of sounds that remind me of Love and Rockets and the Beatles, believe it or not. Don’t be afraid, it is a fantastic sound you’re sure to dig.

You could probably listen to these demented Cow boys a hundred times and never figure out what''s really going on here. John Pruitt, Bill Lee, and Dave Dorsey all seem to be musically inspired a lot of Zappa/Beefheart zaniness, while acknowledgeing the pop eclecticism of XTC, and the improvisational passages of moderm jazz. If another band was despaerately trying to unconventional and uncommercial, this effort would still be the stranger project--like music student/scholors getting some pent-up creativity out and screwing around with a lot of free studio time. On about the 57th listen, you can tell that these guys have major chops--even though the singing is a bit forced. Yet on listen 80-something, you may catch onto some the veiled in-jokes. My guess: it''s brilliant.
