Today, the hip-hop culture has fully immersed itself into the veins of our society. Despite it''s constant decline in morality, the culture is embraced by millions and has become the heartbeat of an entire generation. However, the majority of it''s music is increasingly vulgar, portraying images of violence, pornography, hatred, and disrespect towards women, and yet it is deemed acceptable and is celebrated. Is it possible for this culture to exist without the negativity? Without the ignorance? Is it possible for an artist to make hip-hop music that builds up a woman''s character and image rather than tearing her down and objectifying her? Is it possible to make "hot" music without profanity? To be an inspiration to young people instead of a hindrance? To be a role model instead of a role player? Could there ever be an artist who has the ability to transform the negative stereotype hovering over Urban America?... The answer is, Yes. And he goes by the name of, "Gyfted."
Hailing from Columbus, Ohio, a city known more for it''s powerhouse college football than it''s urban music scene, Gyfted is out to make a difference. He proves that rap music can be BOTH positive and appealing by blending inspirational lyrics with a unique style on top of heavy-hitting production. Backed by his dance team, his concerts are energetic performances with tight choreography. He is one of the few rappers who actually dance, heavily influenced by Will Smith, however, most of his musical influences are derived from the R&B world, from legends such as Boyz II Men, Mariah Carey, Usher, Whitney Houston, Marvin Gaye, Smokey Robinson, etc. With his positivity, the dancing, a sing-song flow, his appeal and increasing popularity among the ladies, it can be difficult to remember that this 22 year old kid is a rapper. The Chris Brown of rap music? Well, that''s what they say at least...
Thousands of fans worldwide, a self-released album, a NACA showcase, a national booking agent, and best of all, he hasn''t even been around that long. Gyfted, an artist 2 years in the making, released his debut album, "Best Kept Secret", last October. He has since obtained several notable performances including The Apollo Theatre in Chicago, Kenyon College, The Ohio State University, OSU-Mansfield, Ashland Community College, Marshall University, and Nationwide Arena in Columbus. He was recently selected by NACA to perform at the Mid-America Showcase this coming November in Peoria, Illinois and simultaneously signed to a 2 year contract with RBG Promotions, a national booking agency out of Miami, Florida. In the span of a year, his career has gained considerable momentum and continues to show no sign of slowing down.
They say that to be a star, you have to be the whole package. You have to have the look, the style, the appeal, the talent, the music, and the determination. In an industry full of conformist and a vast array of artists playing "follow the leader", Gyfted easily stands out as his own entity. This isn''t popcorn music. It isn''t cookie-cutter hip-hop. It''s not crunk music. It''s not snap music. It is music with substance and meaning made to penetrate popular culture and truly make a difference. Gyfted is definitely a star...and his music is the next generation of hip-hop.
