Where do you start telling the story of a band that has spent its entire lifespan starting over? Certainly, City of a Hundred Spires has seen its considerable share of new beginnings. While it would be accurate to state that Vincent Boisvert-Huneault, Maxime Monast and Jean-Michel Lacombe have been playing music together since the spring of 2003, it would also be wholly inappropriate to regard that period as the genesis of COAHS as it has come to exist.
So where and when does it all start? Our little musical entity seemingly came into focus in the fall of 2008.
In late September ‘08, City of a Hundred Spires independently released Graveyard of Ships, our first full-length album and a capstone to the first part in the band’s history. Alternately ambitious, meditative and cathartic, Graveyard of Ships unfolds over 11 songs of delayed, reverb-soaked guitar-driven instrumental rock. Showcasing concise song-writing and defined ‘hooks’, elements uncommon to the instrumental rock idiom, the album is at once a forward thinking slab of pop music and a comprehensive document of the band’s formative years.
Which brings us to right now and back to that pesky question of ‘beginnings.’ As I write this, it’s a snowy January morning nearly 6 years after we first got together in a seedy bar’s seedy basement to write and play music, and it still seems like City of a Hundred Spires is just beginning. COAHS is about reinvention and redefinition, but not at the cost of progress, therefore making hard categorization difficult and often erroneous. It would be wrong to label us an instrumental rock band, a guitar rock band, a post-rock band, a band that writes songs about sinking ships or anything other than simply ‘a rock band.’ What we think we know about ourselves is constantly growing and shifting.
2009 will see City of a Hundred Spires touring behind Graveyard of Ships, writing new material and introducing new elements and instrumentation to its sound. We hope to see you around.
