Chow Chow Music is Peter Hanlon, with help from friends and/or lovers Cathleen Carr, Jim Diotte, and Pat Healy. Doomsday Scenarios is Hanlon''s first solo effort. Largely instrumental, the music is upbeat in contrast to the album title, but recorded with the knowledge that the world is gonna end. Soon.
Anyway, the multi-layered sounds are a result of traditional instruments mixed with not-so-traditional, e.g. slammed doors, live instrument cables left on a heating vent and dropped shoes.
Hanlon played idiosyncratic pop in Boston/Providence-based band International Pen Pal for several years along with Healy; pretended to be an Irish accordionist in several of Carr''s stage productions; and scored two comedic theater productions in Boston entitled Andy Warhol''s Christmas Special -- one dealing with a pedophile Santa impersonator, the other with a Hannukah-driven hostage crisis. So it goes.
Here are some kind words about Doomsday Scenarios:
“Instrumental music made with unconventional instruments in an upbeat mood.”
- Creative Loafing
Chow Chow Music…seems determined to unsettle its audience on the oddly entertaining album Doomsday Scenarios.
…Chow Chow Music’s material works, not only because of the quirky experimentation, but also because of Hanlon’s twisted sense of humor.
