I moved to St. Louis one year ago to pursue my music career. In the process of acquainting myself with the area and old friends, a good friend of mine, a die hard Cardinals fan, and I were talking one night about the possibility of a winning season for the team, and he suggested that the Cardinals needed a theme song or an anthem for the fans.
I thought that was a great idea because I had been to a couple games since I moved here and was really struck by the energy the Cards generate for St. Louis, and saw this as a great opportunity as a new musician to the area to connect with St. Louisans.
So I gave it a shot, and called everyone I knew that were big Cardinal buffs to rack their brains for ideas for the song. I learned a lot about the history of the ball club and in the process I learned a lot about St. Louis.
After I had done some research, I sat down with my guitar and the song really came within one session. I knew that I had to remain true to the musical roots of St. Louis, and so I started with a blues progression and pepped it up a little bit.
Lyrically, the one line I couldn''t get out of my head was "St. Louie bleeds Cardinal red" and once I had paired the style of the song with the hook, the song essentially wrote itself.
While looking through the RFT one day, I found an ad for a recording studio in University City that I could afford. I met with the producer, Patrick Cercilius to get the project started. Once I met with him and introduced the idea for the project, he jumped right on board, helping me to generate a lot of new ideas. He was connected with a broader base of musicians and session players that could bring Cardinal Red to life.
With a lot of help from St. Louis talent and my able and willing -- and particularly loud -- friends and family, we were able to pull it together on a shoe string budget.
I never would have thought that one song could catalyze so many positive things for me personally and professionally. This song has taken on a life of its own. In the process of writing and producing this song, I learned not only about my new city but I also found a way to connect with its people.
