Press Reviews for Chinese Food Takeover:

"Once again, from the home of Carvel Ice Creams Cookie Puss comes The Gifted Children with a brand new CD so full of tasty pop nuggets that I find myself going bulimic with repeated returns to their sonic buffet. These guys are masters of the "lo-fi" psychedelic pop sound that I am so very fond of and they have found a treasured spot next to my Neutral Milk Hotel and Apples in Stereo CDs. The writing on Chinese Food Takeover is simple and catchy but quirky enough to not become predictable. The use of a basement and an 8 track to record makes for an intimacy all to often lost when bands enter "real" studios and with each new release the boys hone their craft and become more and more adept at getting the sound they want."
- Michael Lawson, Ottawa X-Press

"This upstate New York band has 19 albums - mostly EPs - under their belt in addition to several side projects with various band members. No burnout is obvious on this, the band's latest work, however, as Chinese Food Takeover is an absolute gem, with songs that grow on you immeasurably with every listen."
-Jeff Marsh, Delusions of Adequacy

"Though Chinese Food Takeover has all the hallmarks of a band indebted to acts like early Guided By Voices, a few listens give the impression this is out of necessity more than inspiration. Given a larger budget, for example, "Keith Radford's Puppet Head" would probably have ended up sounding like a much more talented version of Sloan. Other songs, such as "Yearbook Superlatives" or "Chicago: Remedy the Guestlist", suggest that the band's lack of more widespread notice is because of dearth of funds, not ideas. Clearly, if they continue on the path they're on now, the Gifted Children will one day be able to choose whether they want to be lo-fi or not."
- Matthew Pollesel, Splendid EZine

"The gifted children sit somewhere between Guided by Voices and Ben Folds, an admirable but likely unintentional destination. With lyrics like "elegiac landing pad" and song titles such as "Doppler Sleep Mechanics," this band makes their own lasting impression. The almost harsh, guitar-driven tunes are smoothed over effectively by playing with the subtle balance between rhythm and melody. Typical foreground instruments such as piano and guitar play substantial roles, but rarely break the periphery, enhancing the ambiguity set up by the dreamlike lyrics. Foundation instrumentation seems to be the rule here, with vocals set softly on top."
-Alicia Koledin, Altarnative

"Just in time for Spring, some of my favorite area artists have new releases out... The Gifted Children delivered their Chinese Food Takeover EP, and yes, it is tasty! Kind of Pavement meets the Beatles, this four-piece brings together the catchiness of melodic pop and the more subtle qualities of indie rock."
- Michelle Picardo, Freetime Magazine

"This is a pretty good, diverse indie rock record. Sometimes it's refreshing to hear an honest, no frills record."
- Scott, Shredding Paper

Other words about the gifted children:

"If you could somehow take a handful of computer geeks and wave a magic wand over their heads, making them surprisingly cool, then you would have ... the musical talents of The Gifted Children."
- Melissa Baker, Alfred University's Fiat Lux Newspaper

"Imagine a completely fresh approach to the Guided By Voices style of songwriting. The Gifted Children, perhaps the most prolific band you're going to hear of, write immaculate, unique, wonderful songs."
- Jeff Marsh, Delusions of Adequacy

"The Gifted Children have mastered the art of quantity and quality."
- Mark Norris, BuffaloBeat

"A slice of indie heaven"
- Michelle Picardo, Freetime Magazine

"They bring a blend of incredible musicianship, delectible lyrics, slapstick dance, verbal abuse, and all around folly together in a life-altering stage phenomenon!"
- Nancy Sullivan,

"I love this band...."
- Michael Lawson, Ottawa X-Press

"The band's deeply affecting, acoustic-based numbers are thoughtful, creative and whimsical..."
"...the quartet's live shows are upbeat and often hilarious..."
- Toni Ruberto, Buffalo News

"Seems like every other year the Buffalo Bills lose the Super Bowl. The Gifted Children turn the gloom hanging over their city into bittersweet indie rock. Maybe Lou Barlow should move upstate."
- Eric Zappa,

"High energy band with quick and quirky pop-driven melodies with totally creative lyrics to make you smile."
- Student Association, Alfred University
