Born, reared, educated in Nashville, Tennessee. Wilma began her musical training under Jimmy Osborn (uncle) a noted pianist and organist in Nashville. Due to his blindness, Wilma was responsible for accompanying Mr. Osborn to all churches, concert halls and to recording sessions where he was a studio musician, allowing her the opportunity to become involved in and sing back-up for some of the greatest gospel singers of that era. Mr. Osborn formed a group called the Spence Gospel Singers and Wilma was allowed to sing and travel with them throughout the Tennessee, Kentucky and Indiana areas. Wilma became a member of the Gospel Chords, the sister group to the then famous Royal Gospel Singers of which Bobby Jones was a member, where she traveled and toured with such groups as the Traveling Notes, The Gospel Pearls and many others to include Rev. James Cleveland. Wilma is a 42 year member of The Gospel Music Workshop of America, Inc. (GMWA) where she serves as captain of the soprano section leaders of the national mass choir, and a charter member of the Houston Chapter of G.M.W.A.
As a U.S. military dependant in Karlsruhe, Germany, Wilma was the featured soloist in concert (in Dutch) with the American-based Gospel Choir. Wilma has been the featured soloist on many recorded projects through the years including Rev. Eugene Williams and the Interdenominational Choir on the single “Precious Lord”, as well as “Bye & Bye”, with V. Michael McKay and The Redeemed Family, “Do You Want To Be Healed?” the Houston Chapter GMWA Live with Rev. James Cleveland singing “Only The Righteous”, the New Mount Carmel Baptist Church Choir, “Didn’t I Tell You”, Brian Dunlap & Total Praise “Make Me A Blessing”, Damian Price “God Meant It For My Good”, the National Mass Choir of GMWA featured on “Over In Zion”, “Come On In The Garden” and live in Orlando, Florida, “Think Of His Goodness.”
Upon moving to Houston Wilma was a member of the Houston Interdenominational Choir under the leadership of late Mr. Eugene Williams, and has served on the music staff of The Mount Horeb Missionary Baptist Church, Rev. S.H. Smith, Pastor, The New Mount Carmel Missionary Baptist Church, Rev. C.A. Berry, Pastor (deceased), The Sunlight Missionary Baptist Church, Rev. Roy E. Easley (deceased), and is currently a member of The Island of Hope Church of God In Christ, where Bishop Prince E. W. Bryant, Sr., is Pastor. She is a member of V. Michael McKay and The Redeemed Family and is currently serving as Director of Music for the Sunlight Baptist Tabernacle, where the Rev. C. L. Harvey is pastor.
Wilma is married to Mr. Frank Bivens, Sr., and is the mother of four (4) biological children, four (4) stepchildren and the grandmother of 15 collective. There are too many extended children to number or name, but they include some of the best musicians and singers in the City of Houston.
Wilma is currently working on her debut project titled “God Will Do It” that will be released in June 2009.
