13th Floor was founded by singer/pianist Josh Kutchai of Charlottesville, VA and drummer Mike Kardos of West Long Branch, NJ. The band played the East Coast for much of the 90s; the live band included Bruce Gatewood on guitar and John Ross on bass.
When "Circus Under the Sky" was originally released in 1996, it was the world’s first indie "enhanced CD," in which music and multimedia were on the same disc. Interestingly, the technology was fairly limited at the time, and listeners of the audio CD had to manually forward past track one, which contained all the multimedia information.
The album’s first singles were "Nothing at All" and "Judy." Both songs charted on a number of radio stations. Though not technically a single, the 8-minute epic "Four-Letter Word" got lots of airplay as well.
