Details:
Joyous Sounds was founded in 1991. The group started by playing Christmas Carols at an AARP banquet. The small group of musicians and singers that performed attracted so much notice that soon other organizations and individuals were clamoring for similar performances for their functions. The group has grown to its present number of fourteen drawing its members from Lockport and Houma.
In time it was decided that Joyous Sounds would be a fitting name for the group because the members share a desire to experience the sheer joy of making musical sounds for the entertainment and benefit of others. Over the years Joyous Sounds has performed throughout Lafourche and Terrebonne parishes, always at no charge but simply for the purpose of serving others and, in many cases, to help raise funds for worthy causes.
Joyous Sounds takes a choral approach to presenting musical selections usually in four and sometimes five and six part harmony. The main instrumentation is guitars, bass guitar and flute but on occasion there have been keyboards, drums and other percussion instruments as well. Some rather unusual instrumentation that has been used would be the slide whistle, train whistle, and cow bells to name a few. The songs that Joyous Sounds sings are wide and varied but the group likes to leave a positive message with its audiences.
In May of 2008 Joyous Sounds released its first CD entitled “As One Voice.” The CD was recorded in Houma at Digital Sac-A-Lait Productions. Pershing Wells served as recording engineer and producer. The CD contains original compositions by Kevin Gaubert. Many of the songs are upbeat and leave a person feeling good about life.
The group members include sopranos Mona Arcement, Suzanne Gaubert, and Jamie Wiley. The alto section is made up of Marge Barker, Patricia Champagne, and Anne Gaiennie. The tenors consist of Curtis Arcement, Hank Boudreaux, and Kevin Gaubert. The bass section has Robert Adams, Charles Gaiennie, and Robert Rome. Charles Gaiennie and Kevin Gaubert play 6 and 12 string acoustic and electric guitars. Robert Adams plays bass guitar. Betsy Arcement plays flute and keyboard. Jamie Wiley plays keyboard and Ted Hoffman plays drums and percussion.
Joyous Sounds performs two concerts a year. One is in the spring or early summer and the second is for Christmas. Other concerts and performances are contracted as they are requested.
Future plans of the group include the recording of two future CD’s. One of new original material and the other a Christmas CD of a mixture of original material and time honored favorites.
