“I remember the day,

I lay sprawled out on the floor.

Stay here my momma screamed.

She ain’t here no more.”

It is nothing short of a miracle that Brandy is even here to tell

her story. She tells every brutal detail with brutal honesty. Brandy
Li was six years old when she witnessed her father murder her
mother. “Don’t worry, he told me,” says Brandy Li, “he’d go
get me a new mommy. When he was arrested, I was forced from one
turbulent situation into another.”
Born to teenage parents in Chattanooga, Tennessee, nothing about
Brandy Li’s life was easy. After her mother’s murder, she lived
with her father’s alcoholic mother, but was never wanted. She was
permanently kicked out at age 14, when her uncle tried to rape her
and the rest of the family blamed Brandy Li. After that she was
shuffled around between friends, relatives and strangers until she
settled with her mother’s mom. “My Momma Jolley saved my life,”
recalls Brandy Li. “she nurtured me and showed me there was an

entire world out there. She gave me the strength and courage to
salvage my existence.”
Still, the road ahead was not easy. Shortly after graduating from

high school, her aunt’s new husband attempted to rape her at
gunpoint. Brandy Li stood up to him. “I was tired of being
victimized,” she says, “and I was finally old enough to do
something about it. ‘Well, you’re gonna have to shoot me first,’
I answered. When you got nothing to lose, you’d be amazed how un- afraid you become. After that, I ran like my ass was on fire. I knew
I had to get out of there. I moved to Miami and never looked back.”

Brandy Li brings the same fearlessness to her music, but if it
had been up to her family, she never would be dong it. She attended
mostly black schools and rap came into her life in the second grade.
“When I started listening to rap music and rapping at home, they
totally freaked!” Brandy Li recalls. “By the fifth grade I was
hiding out in my bedroom and writing my own rhymes. I listened to a
lot of Sir Mix-a lot, NWA and Eazy E growing up. Eazy E was my
favorite.”
Despite the insanity going on all around, Brandy Li kept her wits

about her. She managed to graduate high school, despite being bounced

around her entire young life. She thought that education would be her

way out, not rapping. Besides, white girls don’t rap! “I fled to
Miami to find myself again,” Brandy Li recalls. “I thought I could
outrun my demons, but they followed me around everywhere I went. I
was empty inside. Broken and lost.” Then, one day at work, she

heard “Hello My Name Is” by Eminen, and she found herself inspired
to write again. Slowly she began getting back into it. Before long,
she was in Los Angeles rapping and doing shows!
It was at her first show, opening for George Clinton, that Union
Avenue Entertainment discovered her. “I was nervous as hell,”
Brandy Li recalls. “When my turn came up I got on the mic and ripped
it. I don’t know what came over me! It was like I was standing

beside myself, just watching.” Also watching was Jeff Campbell,

Union Avenue Entertainment’s Executive Vice President of A & R. He
liked what he saw and heard. He made sure that she didn’t get away.
While other labels tried to get Brandy Li to change what she did,
Union Avenue encouraged her to let it rip. “I don’t care what
color she is,” says CEO Ulysee Carson, “she’s the real thing.
She goes out there and lays it right out on the table.”
Union Avenue sent Brandy Li back to Chattanooga and hooked her up

with some record producers. What was supposed to be a demo turned
into Brandy Li’s debut album. “Ulysee Carson was my last hope in
hell,” Brandy Li says. “Jeff and Ulysee believe in me and what I
do.” What she has done is record a remarkable debut album. Nothing
To Lose is a powerful dose of bitter honesty and painful truth, told
with unexpected insight and clarity.
“I’m from the dirty down side of Tennessee.

There’s ten million more slum babies, just like me.

It’s sorta like a pit fight from the day you arrive,

Nobody give a damn if you live or you die.

Realize, you’re on your own.”

- Finally Free by Brandy Li

Very soon, you’ll hear Brandy Li’s music ringing out

to Lose, she unleashes it all on the world. You better brace
yourself. Brandy Li holds nothing back!
