The composer, J. P. E. Hartmann (1805 -1900), was father-in-law to fellow Danish composer Neils Gade, Although Hartmann worked as a civil servant for 41 years he was a central figure in Danish musical life and was connected with the formation of the Copenhagen Musical Society, whose president he became in 1839. The long introduction to the overture is not very interesting, but in the later energetic sections it suddenly catches fire.
