Let Jonny Berliner brighten up your winter. FRIEND FOR ALL SEASONS is the debut solo album for London singer-songwriter, Jonny Berliner. Recorded on a shoestring in and around London, and mixed in a remote farmhouse in Cornwall, the album is a tapestry of sounds and songs taking you on an emotional journey through the ups and the downs of a topsy-turvy year.
Rather than wallow in misery like many of his contemporaries, Jonny has conjured up a smile-inducing cornucopia of mellow folk, twisted with orchestral euphoria, jazz and sounds from the real world. If you took Damien Rice and fed him sunshine, peaches and valium for a few months, this record may well be the result. He combines the breeziness of Jack Johnson with the sharp observational lyrics of Mike Skinner in songs about the weather, the tube, and boozy nights out with friends.
FRIEND FOR ALL SEASONS took a year to record. The visionary recording was produced by multi-instrumentalist Matt Nicholson who recorded over seventy musicians, playing just about every instrument from glockenspiel to euphonium via the kazoo and some tin-pot percussion. The laborious recording process was finally complete when Matt and Jonny threw a filing cabinet into a skip on an industrial estate near Newquay just for its percussive effect. Most of it was recorded in Matt’s bedroom, and the stunning artwork was designed by Yoav Segal, also in his bedroom.
No stranger to the stage, screen or airwaves, Jonny’s appeared live on BBC2, LBC and BBC Radio Leeds, and has performed FRIEND FOR ALL SEASONS live – to great
acclaim – accompanied by the Royal Academy of Music Session Orchestra and conducted by Douglas Whyte (Pop Idol).
