The record opens with "White Lips"--a wistful, haunting song about being shot--by Cupid''s arrow. In a complementary way, in "Life''s Rich", love is like a bird that carries you away. "Those Eyes" is about love at first sight; "You, I" is a bit like the film "Titaniic"--churning, rising water all around in a romantic kind of way.
In "Cradle Lake" and "Underbelly", the young couple deals with getting settled in society--and starting a family.
Kids are the focal point of the middle portion of the record. In "Unscathed Journeymen" the father sings a lullaby encouraging the child to be brave in faciing nightmares. In "Oy Autumn" the start of a school year arrives.
With so many marriages on the rocks these days, this record can stand as an exception. Hopefully, it can be an example of how life can be interesting without infidelity. The song "Every Day Affair" makes this point--the couple maintains their passion after years together by imagining they''re having an affair with each other.
Nevertheless, in "Family Man", the husband takes time to observe on the domestiic front: "and there''re sneakers in the hallway, and they''re knickers in the hallway, and they''re Snickers in the hallway.."
The kids take over the dialogue in "You Oughta Notice Why"--two of them jousting back and forth to hilarious efect. Then in "The Show" the family decides to go to the circus, and the children fantasize about everything that could go wrong there: "See the clowns all run amuck, hope the lion-tamer gets stuck!"
This rercord is mostly straight-ahead solo acoustic--one singer, one guitar. But there are moments you might think otherwise. "Underbelly" features a "duet" falsetto; "Alphabet Soup" employs a tape looping effect; and the vocals on "Family Man" sound like a frog is stuck in his throat.
By the time "Annatto In" rolls around, the kids are nearly grown-up, and the controversy is about--spices. Then the "Children Fly Away", but the couple continue to take comfort in each other in "Those Lights" out on a sailboat. In "Broken Laughter", the kids take up their adult lives, confidently dealing with a difficult world.
