Taking the classic coming of age story line of "man gets into a boat to find himself" and applying it to other nautical literary mores like Rime of the Ancient Mariner and Kubla Khan, Denton casts a cautionary tale that those that try to avoid their problems will always be forced to face them. In the end, we find it may not be that bad after all.
