Presents Songwriter and Performer Doyle LeMaster

“Before writing “Christmas In Afghanistan,” Doyle LeMaster could not hear the sound of music that once danced constantly inside his head. After a fiery head-on collision in which both his legs were crushed, mentally, Doyle suffered other problems as well…
According to Doyle, “Two plus two equals four---yet, I would write 5, 7, or 9---seldom 4 when writing out a check. Driving? I could be five minutes from home and not be able to process how to get there after dark. I would call my wife Cathy to come and lead me home.
“The neurophysiologist said my brain had been damaged in such a way that I would never practice law. I did not understand his explanation that I was suffering from a closed or traumatic head injury----a ricocheting back and forth of the brain against the inside of the skull upon impact.
“Through the Alabama Head Injury Foundation staff, I learned the many methods of coping with the damage done to my brain and my body. AHIF taught me about head and spinal cord injuries. With their staff I was able to help develop some of their outreach and volunteer programs.
“Being able to write “Christmas In Afghanistan” thrilled and haunted me as I wrote it. Before writing it, I was involved in another accident. Partially paralyzed---when I spoke--- my words came out wrong. I was inattentive when the doctors spoke. A doctor evaluated my mental abilities for hours. He prescribed a medication for the inattentiveness. That afternoon I began singing phrases, stringing “song hooks” together and humming. When I realized it, I whirled my wheelchair out of the room, found the doctor and asked him what kind of pill he had given me!”

Doyle, I think this is something special.

Nancy Logan, secretary to Paul Corbin, vice president of public relations/songwriters, BMI, pours a cup of coffee and served it to me in a silver cup. Surprised, I thank her, and turned my attention to Paul. He is leaning back in his chair---eyes closed.---listening to the first song that I have written in eight years---“Christmas In Afghanistan.”
