"Beast With 2 Backs is, aside from a Shakespearean reference to sexual intercourse (from Othello, in case anyone’s curious), a man who refers to himself as Temple and a woman known as DJ Swan. Together, the two produce music that’s sort of techno (DJ Swan “plays” the laptop for beat mixing), sort of hip-hop, sort of Euro-industrial, definitely rock (it’s got guitars and feedback) and really, really interesting. Somehow, they put all these elements together and come up with some very different, yet accessible, sounds. Their lyrics can be poetic and cryptic (“Snap before you fluff my lady, snap before you fluff”), and the songs can be fun and danceable as with the guaranteed-to-get-you-moving, almost techno Talking Heads-ish “Pharmacy of Self-Esteem.” Temple’s voice in this wry commentary about mood-altering pharmaceuticals reminds me of David Byrne. In other songs, like the more haunting and poetically political “Hungry Brother,” his vocals are somewhat operatic and distant. Each song has a different mood and there is sonically something new to discover during each listen. The lyrics keep the mind occupied while the sound takes the soul on a journey. There is nothing boring here. The production, by the way, is outstanding. I am captivated." (Robin Umbley, The Noise)

Beastwith2Backs is a new collaboration formed from the Temple solo project (https://www.tradebit.com ; 2000-2005). New to the North American music scene, the duo has performed widely in the Far East and placed numerous songs in film, including composing the soundtrack for the feature film documentary,"Flying Downhill," the story of America''s living legend downhill ski-racer, Bode Miller (https://www.tradebit.com) ("Flying Downhill" to be released January 2006).

At the conclusion of his solo "MonsterTruck in China" tour, Temple, after long and determined seduction, lured his longtime underground producer and puppeteer, DJ Swan, to the stage. In the Fall of 2005, the band settled down into their Guangzhou, China studio and after 6 months of experimentation managed to develop a hybrid sound that blends the hectic flow of Temple''s guitar and vocal style with the hypnotic funk of DJ Swan''s beat mixing. They created a sound that has been described as "Rock-Tronic," "Anthemic Trip-Rock," and even "Talking Heads-meet-The White Stripes."

Says DJ Swan: "We''ve always liked a lot of the stuff we hear in Hip Hop and dance music, and even what''s being done by some Rock-DJ''s, but we don''t like the way a lot of people are using the new technology. There''s a lot of laziness, a lot of paint by numbers and rote mixing. We wanted to see if we could really make music with a laptop, make loop-mixing musical--with flow and dynamics and grooves that breathe. After a lot of hard practicing and experimenting, we found a way to use "Ableton Live" to do it (https://www.tradebit.com). Now every set is totally different, completely live, and I can tease new sounds out of old beats, twist and invert and pervert a guitar lick to do something Temple never knew it could do, never wanted it to do. That makes our sets snug but leaves room for the unexpected."

Says Temple: "DJ Swan has come from a place of complete innocence in her mixing technique. She never learned about quantizing beats and arpeggiators and drum machines and click tracks and grooves that drone on for ten minutes without a hint of change. Since we never knew how to do any of that stuff, we just learned to make everything from scratch--play the drums by hand and let the beats sag or rush and work that right into our songs. Now that I have a better sense of Swan''s playing style, I''m starting to customize the loops a bit more which is taking our collaboration and our sound to the next level. What we''re striving for is a completely integrated platform with two instrumentalists where both players can lead and follow."

The band is presently touring New England and making preparations for their upcoming tour of China (April 2006).
