The Home Guard return with their second album, an all together more mature and well-rounded release. There''s a lot of the standard indie-meets-new wave fare that those familiar with The Home Guard will be used to (Turn Me Up and Sweating Blood seem to be establishing themselves as a fans'' favourites), but the balance between Britpop and rock has shifted very much in the latter''s favour.
There are also quite a few surprises along the way. Ever heard an album that features both prog rock and glam rock, for instance? Well, Forlorn Hope and Glory delivers precisely this in the shape of Year Zero and Dead on My Feet (Again). As for the closing track, Other People - it starts off with a classical nod to Beethoven before developing into a folk-influenced ballad.
If you enjoyed A Head of Steam, The Home Guard''s debut album, then this release is precisely what you''d expect, only a little bit bigger. This time it''s more bombastic than quirky; more grand than concise; more raw, yet better produced. In the words of respected Norwegian music blog Acuvi: "This is epic, and a genuine masterpiece."
