MP3 Alison Dennis - The Old Adventures of Pedalcap

This is what happens when a down-trodden cartoon character from the mind of an eccentric young woman decides to create a folk music collage about, among other things, soul transplants, 80s nostalgia and anthropomorphic felines.

The Story:

Having never been considered "Mr. Popular" during his
school years, Pedalcap continued to live the life of an
outsider long after graduating from Portland Community
College in 1977. He attributed his lack of social
success to the fact that he had a foot for a head. He was
probably correct in such an assumption.

He spent most of his adult life living alone in a shabby
apartment in Seattle, WA and working
at a local Jack in the Box fast food restaurant. He
lived a life of loneliness and isolation in which he maintained lax hygiene practices and conversed often with the house plants and floorboards.

Yet in 1991, this 37-year-old virgin decided to bring joy into his life and the lives of others through music! His awkward, folksy act was not well-received by the denizens of local Seattle bars and dance clubs. He often found himself running for his life from angry, disillusioned grunge/pop hipsters and drunken foot fetishists, but he did develop a loyal three-person fan base of which I am a member.

I first saw him perform sometime in February of ''92 at the Velvet Elvis where he was opening for Chess Piece Face, a They Might Be Giants tribute band. He only got through three songs before an irate crowd member grabbed his guitar and smashed it, drawing roars of grateful applause from the rest of the audience, but after hearing those three enchanting tunes, I was hooked! Immediately after the incident, I ran after Pedalcap and offered to buy him a new guitar. Two others later joined me in the business of Pedalcap fanaticism and periodic guitar replacement. Barney, Louise and I were somehow captivated by his sheepish and somewhat ill-founded optimism in this era of "infinite despair chic".

Pedalcap died tragically in October, 1999 from hepatitis which he contracted as the result of his filthy living conditions. As the only non-institutionalized fan of Pedalcap, I have taken it upon myself to make his clumsy,
but honest and beautiful music known to the world.
So I purchased a used four track tape recorder at a garage sale, borrowed my cousin''s MIDI keyboard and proceeded to record all of the tunes that I could play from memory. The recordings are noticeably low-budget and I have also made a lot of whimsical stylistic changes in the arrangements, but I still believe that these versions of Pedalcap''s songs remain true in spirit and basic form to the originals. It is my hope that these songs will bring joy and wisdom to others thereby rendering Pedalcap''s existence considerably less pathetic.
