In April 2007, we released an EP called Butterfly Sketches — a collection of songs we had poured more of ourselves into than ever before. Little did we know, those songs had only just begun; they would become a much more significant part of our lives than we ever imagined.
For the next two years, we lost ourselves on the road, trying to let those songs breathe and find a life of their own in the lives of the people we were lucky enough to play them for. We saw every corner of the country, and while each night the songs came out sounding a little different than they had the night previously, we’d be lying if we said that the sameness of our never-ending road trip didn’t start to catch up with us. All of the sudden, two years had passed, and the reasons we fell in love with music were starting to hide themselves behind lonely nighttime drives, gas stations, and hotel rooms.
So, in 2009, we stepped back and tried to ask ourselves the very difficult question: “Why?” Our favorite poet, Rainer Maria Rilke, told a young writer to ask himself a similar question when he wrote the following letter:
“There is only one way: Go within. Search for the cause, find the impetus that bids you write. Put it to this test: Does it stretch out its roots in the deepest place of your heart? Can you avow that you would die if you were forbidden to write? Above all, in the most silent hour of your night, ask yourself this: Must I write? Dig deep into yourself for a true answer. And if it should ring its assent, if you can confidently meet this serious question with a simple, “I must,” then build your life upon it. It has become your necessity. Your life, in even the most mundane and least significant hour, must become a sign, a testimony to this urge.”
After spending some much needed time home, asking ourselves serious questions about the path we were traveling, we began to realize that what we love most about this life — songs — are still as much a passion of ours as the day we first tried to capture how we felt through notes, chords, and melodies. So we started writing again. We started writing a lot. We slowly changed our focus towards what we love and away from what we thought was required to do what we love. To help mark the transition, we spent a week with our friend Ric Hordinski, the same producer we worked with on Butterfly Sketches, and recorded a few of our early favorites.
The three songs here are the result of that week, but even more of that, they are the result of a year of remembering why we’re in band called far beyond frail. They, and what we hope will be a lot of songs to follow, are here for no other reason than we had to write them. We don’t write because we think it will make us famous, or rich — we don’t even write because we want to be heard. We write because we’re are fascinated by life and love and that is how we best understand them. In other words, we write because we wonder.
