Details:
You are probably familiar with the much-loved poem by Minnie Louise Haskins (1908) which was made famous by the late King George VI. You may even be of an age to remember the 1939 Christmas broadcast at the start of the Second World War when the King read,

‘I said to the man who stood at the Gate of the Year,
“Give me a light that I may safely tread into the unknown.”
And he replied, “Go out into the darkness
and put your hand into the hand of God.
That shall be to you better than light
and safer than a known way”...
...So I went forth and, finding the Hand of God,
Trod gladly into the night.
He led me towards the hills
And the breaking of day in the lone east... ‘

The line ‘Gladly into the night’ suggested a wonderful title for the CD which Val Goldsack and I spent a lot of time over the last year putting together. Many of you will already be familiar with the work of liturgical composer, singer and guitarist Val Goldsack through the Morning and Evening Prayer. Her ministry is a real Mercy ministry, one which reaches and touches many people. Her work is available through JHN Liturgical Music (an independent non-profit making publisher of contemporary Catholic music).
The ‘Gladly into the night’ CD was an idea that came to each of us quite independently. Val had a strong feeling that the ‘Way of the Cross’ was a devotion which would lend itself to a background of music, and that it might be a particularly helpful resource for anyone suffering terminal illness or involved with end-of-life care. When Val contacted me to ask if I would like to be part of a collaborative ‘Way of the Cross’, I took up the challenge wholeheartedly... the material had for some time already been taking shape in my mind.

It was important to reflect the solemnity of the Way of the Cross and the depth of the human emotions it stirs, yet in a way that leaves the listener feeling safely ‘held’. We did not want this to be an unbearably moving experience or to connect people with their pain in a way that left anyone feeling alone or inconsolable. Very sensitively Val put together some comfortingly traditional & well loved sacred music (instrumentals) together with some really beautiful music and refrains that she composed herself.. The effect is moving and inspiring and the listener is assured of God’s companionship every step of their way from life, to death and beyond death to fullness of Life in his presence.
