Take it Personally
Austin singer-songwriter Greg Engle used to call himself a folk singer trapped in a diplomat’s body. With the release of “Take It Personally,” this former ambassador has busted out with ten songs of life, love and Africa. “What attracted me to Greg’s music was its sheer authenticity,” says veteran Austin producer Stephen Doster. “He’s lived the stuff he’s singing about, and that really comes through.”
Biography: Engle – a military brat, former Peace Corps volunteer and career diplomat – has led a life of constant travel. Music, meditation and his bride of 36 years have been the constants in his life. He’s witnessed attempted coups, had lunch with Nelson Mandela, and seen two African dictators fall. Four songs on the album provide colorful accounts of his many years in Africa. He currently teaches and works at UT-Austin.
The Album: “Take It Personally” unites Engle and Doster, who keeps their acoustic guitars and Engle’s vocals out in front while enlisting some of Austin’s finest musicians to bring the songs to life: Chris Maresh (bass), Donny Wynn (percussion), Rolf Ordahl (keyboards), Brian Standefer (cello), and Joel Laviolette (marimba/mbira). Devon Guliford, Erin Ivey, Donna Lipmann, James Stevens, and Doster provide background vocals, and Nick Classen plays the bagpipe “cameo.” There''s a lot of vintage sound on the album: high chorus harmonies, some with an almost Motown quality, Leslie organ and electric guitar, and a clinky Wurli electric piano. James Stevens recorded and mixed the album at EAR in Austin, assisted by Kyle Ratcliff.
Greg Engle contributes proceeds from the sale of his album and songs to A Glimmer of Hope for the construction of schools in Ethiopia and to the Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund USA.
