And they say the south is ringtone rap...That we''re not capable of intelligent flow, so on and so on. Introducing Barrett the one to put an end to the clichés and speculation on southern artist’s potential. Bringing back some creativity of what has been lost in music today due to "monkey see monkey do" strategies. From composing beats, to writing rhymes Barrett is all music with a never ending hunger for more.
He was born 1983 in the Corpus Christi neighborhood of Hillcrest as an only child to a single mother, living in a full house with grandparents, uncles, aunts, and his great grandfather. He''s no stranger to making it work observing everyone do what they can to better the living situation. Football would become the motivation to move when his uncle got drafted 3rd round to the Detroit Lions. It was then everyone got moved to North side Houston, TX in Greenspoint. It was Barrett''s 5th grade year when the biggest blow of his life hit him; coming home to find out his mother was gone due to suicide. "I never really healed from that, I would have wanted to know what was on her mind." Forced to be stronger he vowed to never quit no matter how bad it gets, and make a way to be happy.
Barrett didn''t start writing rhymes until his senior year in high school. His friend Slugga was always the aspiring rapper, and Barrett would eventually fall into the mix as a hobby. But why choose the name Barrett as his stage name? "I could have been a Johnson, Davis or whatever if I had a father, but I was given my mother''s maiden name and I use that till this day to never forget just who I am and where I come from."
After high school Barrett made the decision to join the U.S. Marine Corps and serve 4 years in the military and a deployment to Iraq. It was in the service when his love for music would brew and turn into a something he wanted to pursue seriously. Upon the end of his contract Barrett had enrolled into Full Sail Real World Education to get a more in depth understanding of music, sound, and the environment surrounding that industry. Learning to be an engineer and receive an Associates of Science degree in Recording Arts, at the same time never letting down on writing material and composing his own beats. “If I could sum up my music in one word, it would be perseverance. Although the struggle can seem constant and there''s so many temptations and obstacles keep pushing for your goals, and his new album coming soon "The Motivation" expresses just that. Mix southern flow, Texas swag, lyricism, poetry, and an in your face delivery and you''ve got Barrett... Texas stand up!
