MORN''S LANDING
"Morn''s landing" is a side-project created by Chapman Stick player Andy Salvanos, inspired by the early works of Mike Oldfield and the synth-laden compositions of Jean Michel Jarre, Vangelis and Georgio Moroder. It marks a temporary stylistic detour for Andy, who has made a name for himself as a solo performer. Yet, his familiar trademark of strong melodic themes and instrumental "storytelling" permeate "Morn''s landing", conjuring up powerful images of an uncertain and sometimes frightening world, but one where beauty and love ultimately prevail.
ANDY SALVANOS
After working around the world as a session bassist, Andy Salvanos switched to the Chapman Stick; arguably his most rewarding decision to date. In three years as a solo artist, Andy has built an impressive performance resume and is now finishing his fourth album. He makes effective use of the instrument''s full range; taking ideas from classical guitar, folk, Latin and new age music and fusing them into something unique.
Andy is an avid street performer who can often be heard in Adelaide''s Rundle Mall, where he quickly attracted the attention of local organizations and media. He has performed at both of the Adelaide International Guitar Festivals to date, from foyer act in 2007 to featured local artist at the 2008 launch. He has been interviewed by national and local publications, including Australian Music Forum and Merge Magazine.
A prolific writer and improviser, he considers most of his material "work in progress". Andy''s current recordings include "Fragments" and "Closer" from 2007, and the new release "Morn''s landing". In 2009, "Closer" was nominated for the JPF Awards "Best Solo Instrumental Album", and subsequently finished second behind Jeff Schmidt''s "Outre" in the final poll.
In what is believed to be a world-first, Andy recently joined South Australia''s Graduate Singers choir in a concert of new interpretations of music ranging from Renaissance to the modern day. In another first for a Chapman Stick player, he will be performing at the National Folk Festival in Canberra in 2010.
