Scott Perry,a central Florida native, began his music career in northern California after moving to San Jose, CA in 1992. He received his B.A. in music performance in 2002 from Appalachian State University in Boone, North Carolina, graduating Magna Cum Laude with concentrations in music composition, under the direction of Dr. Scott Meister, and guitar studies under the direction of Dr. Douglas James. Since 2002, Scott returned to San Jose and has finished the coursework for the degree of M.A. in music composition under the direction of Dr. Brian Belet and Dr. Pablo Furman at San Jose State University and will be awarded the degree in June of 2010. Scott runs his own music studio and production company, JSP Guitar and Sound Studio, in Sunnyvale, CA, where he teaches, writes, records, and produces.
As an accomplished performer Scott has led a guitar quartet, sang jazz, classical, and rock vocals, played jazz and rock bass, jazz and rock guitar, Dixieland banjo, orchestral percussion, violoncello, lute, and his favorite, the classical guitar. The diversity in styles and instruments that Scott plays has given him the opportunity to perform in various situations and venues ranging from concert halls and orchestra pits to restaurants and nightclubs. From 1999-2002 Scott was awarded and maintained the Hester Memorial Performance Scholarship at Appalachian State University.
Scott''s versatility is reflected in his compositions that range from works for chamber groups and orchestra, as well as for soloists, rock bands, jazz groups, percussion ensembles, and choir, among many others. In 2004, he received the Eva Thompson Philips award for music composition. Scott scored the independent films So Beauty (2006), and The Red Door (2008), and his work, Matador, for string orchestra was premiered by the San Jose Chamber Orchestra in January, 2007. Scott also has experience in theater sound design for: The Kite Runner at San Jose State University (Feb. 2007), The Grapes of Wrath at the Steinbeck Museum in Salinas, CA (April 2007), and The Mummified Deer at San Jose State University (March 2008). Scott''s works, Rhythms and Reflections, were featured during the month of December, 2008, in the Kimball Gallery of San Francisco''s de Young Museum. In August, 2009, the de Young Museum commissioned Scott to write, record, and perform the work, Fertile Grounds, in October 2009.
Constantly seeking to extend his musical vocabulary, Scott studies various ethnic music. Recent studies include African drums from Ghana, and the Afghan Rubab, the national instrument of Afghanistan, from master performer Homayoun Sakhi.
