"The Annexe" is the highly anticipated debut album from Cork four-piece Fingersmith and is the first release from Subplot Records.
This is not an album that aims to grow steadily into your affections, nor is it here to follow the latest trends and the rules of the day.
This eleven track titan is here to stand up, smack you in the face, put its arms to its sides and dare you to press repeat.
From the opening track "Pogo", a troubled narrative about an unlikely serial killer, the album takes off with an intensity which continues to build to the final, defiant, bone-crunching chord of "Sub", a chillingly honest ode to a fragile existence ruled by inherent human error.
Prowling the control room is producer Neal Calderwood of Manor Park Studios – undisputedly the right man to harness the ferocity of Fingersmith’s ballsy sound, having produced celebrated records for the likes of Fighting With Wire, The Answer, and Dublin''s Home Star Runner among others.
Driven by a frighteningly tight and urgent rhythm section, Fingersmith serve up the most incendiary of foundations. Coloured by guitars of venom and vocals of passion, the songs circle your head one moment, only to stab you in the chest the next.
With memorable riffs, soaring melodies and shout-out-loud hooks, "The Annexe" fires out a track-listing which scarcely features any song without cause to be considered for release as a single.
While the album maintains its adrenaline through the more down-tempo "Class Clown" and "Everyone’s Around", the real triumph of Fingersmith''s song-writing on this release lies in the marriage of this choppy and intense musical storm with unique and hook-laden vocals.
Thematically, the songs maraud seamlessly from real life stories to imaginary worlds. Songs of conflict in a crumbling world of broken homes and serial killer clowns paint a vivid picture that is both kind and brutal in its honesty.
Rather than trying to please you, "The Annexe" presents Fingersmith as they are, telling it how it is - daring you - through a haze of words ripped from the heart and spat out with sincerity - to press repeat on your stereo, and in your head.
