NOTES:

The Field Auxiliary is a Chicago-based recording/performance ensemble initiated by the kinetic release of potential energy waveparticles via the limb tips of principle composer/musician/tryer Dan Smart, as well as via those of present and past collaborators Rob Jensen, Jon Ozaksut, Jon Alvin, Ben Babbitt, Chris Faller. The project was so-named for its intention to convey simultaneously a sense of ambiguous, free space and superimposed, hierarchal order; a sense of withering anonymity and a sense of vibrant community.
"The Mass Ordinary Or Don’t Come Unwound Windwaker" (2009), began in relative isolation as a solo effort on behalf of smart, and, over the course of 14 months, transformed into a teeming group effort that explores the relationships of success, failure, togetherness, isolation, and the spaces in which those opposing forces blur together and blow apart. The words, music, and arrangements contained within this record are attempts to investigate these spaces and amplify their textures. The album''s purposefully unwieldy yet sonorously pacifying title is a distillation of this comforting chaos as well as an affirmation that even the most humble and flawed acts of creation are ''holy'' and that ordinary gestures are capable of extraordinary power if only the their performer is willing to knowingly sail out into a storm of self-doubt and just hang the hell on.
The recording process, which spanned a grueling fourteen months of evenings, weekends, late nights, and after-hours spent tracking and arranging in bedrooms, warehouses, kitchens, garages, and professional facilities, began over time to infiltrate and influence the sound and mood of the record itself in strange and often unintended ways; with the resulting album representing not just a collection of tracks, but a living, breathing THING that had managed to soak-in the everyday working life of smart and his close collaborators. The struggles, the successes, the utter confusion, the bliss of chaos, the outside baggage, the weight of exhaustion, the thrill of creation, and every discernible mode of being in between are thus represented in a fractured but coherent succession of overlapping waves. The music and lyrics on this record negotiate these overlaps and reflect their disconnects musically through a prism-like refraction of pop, rock, psychedelia, folk, and art music styles that is at once dense and ethereal, unsettling and reaffirming, improvisatory and meticulous. The result is a visceral and determinedly human music in layers; sometimes disarming, sometimes challenging, never perfect, always hopeful.
