The Runner in the Snow EP includes 5 tracks recorded during the same sessions as his self-titled debut records. The first two of the tracks are b-sides from the full band debut and the final three are b-sides from the So Long (to the child) album. Raj creates intimate and emotional songs with a strong indie folk rock influence. Most will make comparisons to folk rock artists such as Elliott Smith and Iron & Wine as they share the same breathy voice, melancholy outlook on life, and devotion to folk and the craft of songwriting. However, Sachin definitely has his own style of writing that is as unique as his chord progressions and melodies. There is much beauty that bursts from within Raj’s simple songs. Raj embraces his melodies and let’s his scarce lyrical approach and beautifully played guitar melodies take the lead. Standout tracks include the indie folk-rock gem, “love goes as soon as it lasts” and the acoustic standout track, “all that surrounds me” which includes an Indian raga styling guitar, reminiscent of John Fahey. The Runner in the Snow EP is a great starting point for listeners who are being introduced to Raj’s style and craft. – John Zimmerman
