Stylistically this album represents my evolution to this point in life. Influenced by playing blues harmonica, guitar and fiddle over the years, there are no "real" blues songs on the album, and in fact I find the album hard to pigeon-hole, which would be a problem if I were interested in being pigeon-holed. The songs are lyrically thoughtful and thematically diverse. "Susannah" is a commentary on the aftermath of Katrina on a displaced couple who long to return to New Orleans while "21 Gun Salute" illustrates what war can do to the psyche of a returning soldier and was DJ-mixed by my son in a head-banging style which I find appropriate for the dark story being told. "Long Bangkok Night" was written on my second day in Bangkok, having spent the previous two months traveling in Viet Nam, Laos and northern Thailand. The sensory stimulation of the trip needed expression. "Tropica" deserves a pina colada or margharita under a palm tree. Bravado, false or otherwise, appears in "I''m Alright". We''ve all had that feeling of "Voodoo Love" at one time or another. "Just How Much" asks the question which wants no answer. A long-ago high school crush is the story of "Melanie". The title song "Hourglass" examines the sadness and finality of choices made.
