FOLK: like Joni, FOLK: Modern Folk
Laura Meyer is forever trying to find her home. At the same time she doesn't really want to find it because the journey is far too much fun. She sings:
The present is an exotic destination.
Few have ever been.
Life is not a sentence...
And time is not my friend.
Her natural reflex is to pounce upon any opportunity which presents itself, which has led to twenty-two years of colorful twists and turns. Her awareness of lifeâs fleetingness informs the way she lives and the way she sings. She likens her existence to riding a tire swing â fast and slow, high and low. Circular and always returning to the same core, and yet always fresh and exhilarating.
She enjoys watching thoughts and questions accumulate like rain drops on a warm summer afternoon, and she likes to translate them in her notebooks. Laura has a weakness for pretty notebooks, which serve as portals to her favorite adventures thus far. Here in âAcross the Great Divideâ you are invited to partake in her process of revolving.
She is currently living in Manhattan, where she has a stubborn habit of collecting treasure from the street, much to her roommatesâ frustration. She is a vine scaling walls, trying to find roots through thick cement and forever reaching towards the stars. Often she escapes to somewhere where the air is clean⦠much like Sesame Street. She dances clumsily and sings honestly. Experiencing her songs is similar to making maple syrup in a sugar shack on a crisp Vermont day. Her voice has been likened to Suzanne Vegaâs since long before she began to sing (publicly, that is â Lauraâs mother has plenty of video footage documenting âThe Princess Song,â circa 1987.)
Her friends describe her as naturally awkward and awesomely goofy, and VH1 Song of the Year thinks enough of âLove Isnât Enoughâ to award it Second Place in the Folk category. Laura likes the idea of âfolkâ as in âthe people,â and she believes her songs will change the world.
Laura is currently attending NYUâs Gallatin School of Individualized Study, her fourth university in four years (like stated above, she answers when opportunity knocks). She has recently played at New York venues such as CBGBâs Lounge and Gallery, Pianos, the Lionâs Den, and the legendary Bitter End. The road is forever beckoning, and she is booking summer shows as you read this.
She would like to be your friend â itâs as easy as going to https://www.tradebit.com You can also join her mailing list for updates and tour information by visiting https://www.tradebit.com. Hope to see you on the next journey!
