The last few years or so, Google and the rest of the larger SEs has been aggressively shutting down websites after websites which were caught utilizing Black Hat techniques to gain ranking, backlinks and link manipulations. Gone are the days where Blogging was THE means to gain massive (like in MILLIONS) backlinks to your site overnight! You must remember, there is NO Way you can cheat the SEs for long, after all, Google has teams and teams of PhD Computer Science guys doing nothing but tracking and testing every imaginable techniques there is on the market. No one likes being cheated, especially Google.
If you are smart, you wont buy into the hype of Millions of Backlinks Overnight! or Guaranteed Millions of PR5 Links Overnight!. Perhaps you WILL get those million links overnight, but just as quckly, Googles spiders (which works 24/7) will sniff you out and you WILL be sent to Google hell. Best is that your website is Delisted FOREVER (which is the most common sentence), and worst case is that your Adsense account is banned. Recently, Google has taken the more drastic step of banning ones Adsense / Adwords account due to the seriousness of these offences.
Therefore, if you are serious about your business, you will gain backlinks (exponentially!) the right way. It wont be overnight, it wont be easy, but you will see your links grow organically.
