Watson is on a very much needed holiday, while Holmes stays behind in Baker Street. Even far away, however, Watson comes across a case for his friend. He meets lady called Lady Frances Carfax, who appears to be constantly followed by a mysterious looking man on horse, and a man whom she seems to hate the sight of. Watson writes his friend frequently, expressing his concern and her behavior in regards to the myterious man. It isnt long before Holmes joins Watson, only to find that Lady Frances Carfax has disappeared. The two work together to find the lady, and uncover a huge mystery. In the end, the mysterious rider is revealed to be an old lover of hers, and he ends up caring for the Lady Frances Carfax, who suffers immensely from someone elses hand. Holmes considers himself a failure in the case and refuses any payment.
The best part of this episode is when Watson ends up confronting the mysterious rider when he sees them at a bank. In Watsons frustration with the man, he ends up tackling him to the ground! Holmes is there to break up the fight. This is another one of my favorites. It is the one of the few times we see that Holmes doesnt exactly succeed in a case. He is basically too late to save Lady Frances Carfax. This episode has superior acting from all parts, although I thought the myterious lover could have done a better job acting than he did.
